daisy lady
walking down the sidewalk
of this street
from one end
to the other
i passed by
the daisy lady
with her white hair
sleeping there
on the bench
in front of
the restaurant
in her light blue
tattered dress
and pink yarn
sweater
she wore a straw
hat with a band
of plastic flowers
and i passed by
as she was sleeping
later i passed
by again
and she was
sitting there
a boy sat down
beside her and put
his arm around her
shoulders
and asked if she
had eaten anything
today
she shook her head
and i walked by
and later still
i passed by
here again
she was sitting there
pulling the petals
from a daisy
and tossing the
white leaves
on the sidewalk
in front of me
as i walked
through and stepped
on them
she giggled and
looked at me
with her wide open
glassy eyes
and i walked along
and took these
words with
me
-tom
